They started talking to each other in the local Krio dialect and in one moment one of them got outside. BC went with him, but I heard them talking 'cos the door was half-opened and I was sitting just next to it. In the corridor the man said he knew the people from the pictures, they bought the diamonds. He also confirmed many details. Said that Ben Sali kept talking on a satellite phone with someone they called Alfa Zulu, later I learned from BC that it was a cryptonym of Aziz Nassour, the one who asked for doubling the size of diamond mining. While they were talking outside, the ones inside started getting nervous and when BC came back, they aimed at him with their guns. They were shouting why all of that was so interesting to him, but BC was clever enough to bluff and told'em that Nossour in return for diamonds bought consignments of off-road vehicles and motorcycles for RUF. They were homespun men so easily believed it and turned their anger to Issa Sesay, who was responsible for contacts with Nassour.
They were pissed off at him for not getting their share of the money, motorbikes nor cars, and in their fury they conformed several times doing business with Al-Qaeda. As far as I know, those 6 left the other day for Sesay to get the things clear. I was afraid that everything would come out, the cars were just a bluff, however, there had to be just a little truth in that bluffing, 'cos Sesay "was sweating like a pig", as one of them said, gave them some money and promised to deliver cars in 6 months... I haven't a clue how BC knew about the cars?
Someday, BC said that had some problems with persuading his bosses 'cos they wanted more proof that Al-Qaeda used diamonds for money-laundering and Sierra Leone was the place where all that was run. I couldn't get it what else I was to do if I gave'em names, pictures, connections and the entire mechanism explaining how it worked. At some moment, I remember, he said "They want to see more proof, Ok, they'll have it". He asked me to make an appointment with RUF main leader - Bockarie, who agreed for a meeting, 'cos just as all from RUF believed that BC was a gunrunner.
It was 2000. BC persuaded Bockarie that UN wanted to take control over the diamond fields and to provoke UN to retreat it was necessary to kidnap their workers. BC pushed Bockarie to that idea, who persuaded Taylor to do that. RUF soldiers kidnapped 500 people working for UN and kept them in the jungle. BC persuaded the commander that the captives had to be safe and that if someone had been killed, it would have caused a decisive reaction of the world. BC knew that a place where so many UN workers were kidnapped would immediately bring the attention of the press from all over the world, and it happened!. That was madness. Until then, nobody talked about war, genocide or diamond trade in Sierra Leone. From time to time a short article about it got lost in a newspaper, but the world had other problems on its mind, like those of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and BC with one movement moved the attention of the world to Sierra Leone. When Bockarie realized taking captives was his ultimate mistake, it was much too late. Had stupid explanations it wasn't kidnapping, but the workers got lost in the bush. Ironically, he was still president of Liberia and was forced to negotiate setting free the captives. Day and night satellite cameras were taking photos of the entire country, any movement of armies and rebels. Suddenly, the world saw face to face the genocide, thousands of murdered people in the fields and roads, and among them lines of trucks carrying guns, though earlier it was publicly said that RUF was disarmed - That was proof!, Taylor's connections with RUF came out too.
